Car Haulers for Sale: New vs. Used and What Changes the Price

Big Tex 70CH tandem-axle car hauler trailer at NC Trailers

Browse any listing of car haulers for sale and the price spread jumps out first. Two trailers that look nearly identical in photos can differ by thousands of dollars once you account for age, axle setup, deck material, and brake configuration. Here's what actually drives the difference between a new and a used car hauler, what to inspect if you're looking at a used unit, and how to decide whether paying more upfront makes sense for the way you'll use it.

What Actually Drives the Price on a Car Hauler for Sale

Three things move the price on a car hauler more than anything else: axle count, deck material, and brake type. A single-axle hauler costs less than a tandem-axle model rated for the same GVWR, but you give up stability and the redundancy that keeps you moving if a tire lets go on the highway. Deck material matters too. Wood decks, usually treated pine or Douglas fir, cost less to build than steel or aluminum and stay common on economy models like Big Tex's 60EC. Steel and aluminum decks add cost but hold up better to repeated equipment loading and resist the rot that eventually catches up with wood after years of sitting outside. Brake configuration is the one buyers overlook most. Some economy trailers put electric brakes on only one axle, while higher-tier models brake all wheels, which shortens stopping distance and saves wear on your tow vehicle when you've got a loaded car behind you. Length and width factor in as well, since a longer deck built for a full-size truck or a two-car load costs more than a short unit sized for a compact car or a motorcycle.

New Car Haulers: What You're Paying For

A new car hauler comes with a manufacturer's warranty, known specifications, and none of the wear a previous owner left behind. For a business that hauls vehicles regularly, that predictability is worth real money. You know the axle capacity, the frame condition, and the wiring are exactly as advertised, and a warranty claim on a bent frame or a failed bearing is a straightforward process instead of an out-of-pocket repair. A new trailer also lets you spec exactly what you need, from ramp style to deck length to whether both axles are braked, instead of settling for whatever happens to be sitting on a used lot. For a first car hauler, that flexibility often matters as much as the price, because the wrong configuration means re-shopping inside a year or two.

Used Car Haulers: What to Inspect Before You Buy

A well-kept used car hauler can save you a good bit of money, but the inspection matters more here than on almost any other trailer, because a car hauler routinely runs at or near its rated capacity. Start with the frame. Look along the main rails and cross-members for rust that has gone past the surface into pitting, and check the welds near the axles and coupler for hairline cracks. Pull each tire and check the wheel bearings for play or grinding, since a bearing failure on a loaded hauler is one of the more common roadside breakdowns we see. Check the wiring harness for cracked insulation or corrosion at the connectors, especially if the trailer has spent time near the coast, and test every light and the brake signal before you commit. Ask for the title and registration history, and if anything about the paperwork feels off, the National Insurance Crime Bureau's VINCheck tool lets you look up the VIN for reported theft or salvage history at no cost before you finalize the purchase.

Warranty Coverage: New vs. Used

Warranty is one of the clearest lines between new and used. A new car hauler carries a manufacturer's warranty on the frame, axles, and components for a set period, so a structural problem in the first year or two is the manufacturer's cost, not yours. A used trailer usually carries no warranty at all unless the seller writes one in, so any repair after the sale comes out of your pocket. That gap is worth weighing against the money you save upfront, especially on a trailer that will see frequent, heavy use.

When Paying More Upfront Saves Money Long-Term

If you haul vehicles once in a while, for a weekend project or the occasional car show, a used single-axle hauler with a wood deck is usually plenty, and the lower price is hard to argue with. If you move vehicles several times a month, the math changes. A new tandem-axle trailer with brakes on all wheels and a warranty behind it cuts your downtime risk and the odds of an expensive failure in the middle of a haul, and the extra cost upfront is often less than a single unplanned repair and the time you lose to it.

New and Used Car Hauler Inventory at NC Trailers

NC Trailers, formally North Carolina Trailer Sales, carries both new and used car haulers, including Big Tex's 60EC and 70CH tandem-axle car haulers, at our Thomasville and Winston-Salem lots, so you can put a new unit next to a used one and compare instead of guessing from online photos. Financing is available on both new and used purchases, and applying online before you visit speeds things up once you've settled on the route that fits your budget and how often you'll use the trailer.

If you're ready to compare new and used car haulers, browse the current car hauler inventory at NC Trailers, check the used trailer inventory for pre-owned options, or apply for financing online to get pre-qualified before your visit to either the Thomasville or Winston-Salem location. Come in with a clear sense of how often you'll actually use the trailer and what you'll typically haul, and the sales team can point you to the right new or used unit instead of the first one that fits the budget.

I called and needed something to haul a car on short notice/same day. Carter in Winston Salem found what I needed at the Thomasville location, had the ball rolling on the paperwork and everything within minutes.
I arrived at the Thomasville location and was immediately greeted by and taken care of by Sam. She treated me as if was her own customer and was amazing. Everyone there was super helpful from Shancie in finance, to Tammy who handled my tags to Christian who hooked me up and answered all the questions I had and even the parts/service guys getting my hitch etc.

This was by FAR the best sales experience I’ve ever had hands down. If you need a trailer call Sam in Thomasville or Carter in Winston!

Purchased a 6x12 Nolan trailer today, Dave in Sales assisted and did a great job showing me the trailer and explaining the features and working thru the paperwork; Shancie assisted with processing the registration & tag paperwork and getting all the appropriate paperwork for that filled out; and Christian assisted in getting the trailer hooked up and explaining important items regarding safety, maintenance, etc. Overall very pleased with the transaction and the service received and highly recommend NC Trailers to perspective buyers.
