You just bought a trailer in North Carolina or you are moving to North Carolina and have an existing trailer.  Let’s get the rundown on the titling and registration requirements in NC.  Titling and registration are different in North Carolina.  Let’s take a look at both.

Titling:  Do You Need to Title Your Trailer in North Carolina?

The short answer is yes.  Here’s why:

1. Requirement:  If you're planning to garage your trailer in North Carolina for six months or more each year, you need to title it in North Carolina. The DMV treats trailers just like any other vehicle, so the titling process is similar to what you'd do for a car or truck.

2. Updates: The title only needs updating when there's a change in ownership

   1. Titling Provides Legal Proof of Ownership: Essential for buying, selling, registering, or financing your trailer.

Registration:  Do You Need to Register Your Trailer in North Carolina?

Again, the short answer is yes.  Here’s why:

• Requirement: If you’re towing your trailer on North Carolina roads with a vehicle registered in the state, your trailer must be registered in North Carolina. There are a few exceptions to this, such as tow dollies and some types of agricultural trailers.

• Updates:

  • Single Year:  A single year trailer registration needs to be renewed every year, very similar to how your vehicle registration renewal works.

  • Multi-Year:  A multi-year registration is available for trailers.  You pay a higher one time fee and never have to renew your registration again.  This is the option we recommend to customers that plan to own their trailer for 3 more years.

• Why do we need to register?

  • Trailer and owner are cleared to operate:  Your Tag & Registration signifies that your trailer is cleared to operate in NC and that you are also in good standing with the state.

  • Insurance:  Your registration indicates that you had valid insurance on your tow vehicle at the time of registration. For more information check out our trailer insurance blog and video.

  • Law Enforcement: DMV and other Law Enforcement: can keep track registration information, which helps avoid liability issues if the trailer is stolen or used irresponsibly.
