Understanding the laws and regulations regarding trailer title and registration is crucial, especially when residing in North Carolina. Here’s what you need to know:

Do I need to title and register my trailer?

In North Carolina, yes, trailers must be titled and registered, much like cars. Failure to do so may result in penalties. Even if you’re moving from a state with different requirements, it’s essential to comply with NC regulations.  Check out our blog on NC title and registration for more information.

Are there any exemptions?

Certain trailers are exempt from registration requirements in North Carolina, including those used for agricultural purposes or tow dollies. However, most trailers require a North Carolina license plate. It’s important to note that while not every state mandates trailer titling and registration, failure to comply in states that do can lead to penalties.

What documents do you need?

To initiate the titling and registration process for your trailer, you’ll need the following documents:

  • Driver’s License
  • Proof of insurance on the tow vehicle
  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO)
  • Bill of Sale

If you opt for our title, tag, and tax service, we charge a $249 doc fee, covering all paperwork handling and filing, along with a NC 30-day temp tag. Simply provide your Driver’s License and proof of insurance on the tow vehicle.

What fees should I expect?

Fees vary by state. In North Carolina, in addition to the 3% highway use tax applied to the total bill of sale, expect the following fees:

While many dealerships may require you to visit the DMV tag office to register your trailer and pay these fees, at NC Trailers, we handle title, tags, and registration for any trailer you purchase from us. Call us at (336) 276-0329 for assistance.

Can I be denied a title?

Your title and registration may be placed on hold for various reasons, including issues with debt, credit, child support, or legal matters. Always consult the DMV for specific inquiries regarding trailer titling and registration in North Carolina.

Remember, this guide isn’t exhaustive, and regulations may change over time. For existing trailers purchased elsewhere or inquiries about your title, contact the NC DMV or call their Raleigh office at (919) 469-1444. When contacting them, reference your trailer’s registration card for your title number.
