Tow dollies are single axle "trailers" that allow users to drive the front (or rear) of a vehicle on to the tow dolly, and strap down the front (or rear) tires to safely tow the vehicle behind another vehicle using both the tow dolly's wheels and the wheels of the tow vehicle (including trucks, moving trucks, RVs, etc).

Brakes or No Brakes?

Given single axle tow dollies are designed to have a 2990 GVWR, they do not need brakes on the dolly, but we do offer Stehl-Tow tow dollies with a surge brake option. Basically the weight of the vehicle "pushes" along the tongue of the dolly, and a device on the tongue gets depressed triggering the brakes to activate. As the towing vehicle and the tow dolly equalize and the force on the tongue is reduced, the brakes release. Brakes can be helpful for those with a lighter tow vehicle or a heavier vehicle being towed, or just in general when you are at highway speeds or need to brake unexpectedly, they can provide a shorter stopping distance than just relying on your tow vehicles' brakes.
