Do I Need Trailer Insurance In North Carolina?

Check out this video on "Do I need trailer insurance in North Carolina?"

Do I need an insurance policy on my trailers for registration?

Here’s the deal: In North Carolina, you don’t need separate insurance to register your trailer. You will need  to provide proof of tow vehicle insurance to register your trailer. Your personal auto policy extends liability coverage to the trailer you’re towing, as long as it’s for non-commercial purposes. This means if you cause damage or injury while towing, your auto policy will cover it.

However, it’s important to note that this coverage does not include physical damage to the trailer itself.  There are many coverage options available to protect your trailer investment that are not required for registration. Trailer theft in North Carolina is a problem, so it’s highly recommended that you cover your trailer for theft when

  • it’s hooked to your vehicle away from your home

  • when it’s parked at your home and unhooked from your vehicle.

Locks and supplemental theft coverages are also a good idea for most people.  Also, keep in mind that when financing a trailer, leaders will often require insurance coverages that exceed the minimum requirements set forth by the state.

Borrowing a Friend’s Trailer: Are You Covered?

We’ve all been there: you need to move something too big for your car, and a friend’s trailer is the perfect solution. But before you hitch up and hit the road, let’s talk insurance. Most people overlook this crucial step.

When you borrow a trailer, your North Carolina personal auto policy still extends liability coverage to the trailer. Again, this is only for non-commercial use. So if you cause damage or injury, your insurance has your back up to your liability limits. But remember, any physical damage to the trailer won’t be covered by your auto policy.

Pro Tips for Borrowing a Trailer:

  1. Check with Your Friend: Ask if they have collision and comprehensive coverage on the trailer.

  2. Understand the Risks: If there’s no coverage, you’re on the hook for any damage to the trailer. Make a plan with your friend on how you’ll handle potential repairs or replacements.

North Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements

To legally operate a vehicle in North Carolina, you need to meet these minimum coverage requirements:

  • Bodily Injury: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident

  • Property Damage: $25,000 per accident

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident

North Carolina mandates continuous liability insurance for all registered vehicles. This insurance protects you and your family from injuries and property damage caused by other drivers. Remember, liability insurance must be issued by a company licensed to do business in North Carolina, and every driver must be listed on the insurance document when applying as a new driver.

Why This Matters

North Carolina is an at-fault state. This means if you’re responsible for an accident, your insurance pays for the other driver’s car repairs and medical bills. Having the right insurance protects you financially, ensuring you’re covered in case of an accident.

Key Takeaways

  • No Separate Insurance Needed:  Your personal auto policy covers liability for the trailer you’re towing.  You do need to provide proof of tow vehicle insurance when registering your trailer.

  • Physical Damage Not Covered: You’ll need separate coverage or a plan with the owner for any damage to the trailer itself.

  • Borrowing a Trailer: Always check if the trailer has collision and comprehensive coverage.

  • Minimum Coverage: Ensure you meet North Carolina’s auto insurance requirements to stay legal and protected on the road.

Understanding these insurance nuances ensures you’re compliant with North Carolina laws and protected from potential financial risks. Stay informed, stay insured, and you’ll tow with confidence.

I called and needed something to haul a car on short notice/same day. Carter in Winston Salem found what I needed at the Thomasville location, had the ball rolling on the paperwork and everything within minutes.
I arrived at the Thomasville location and was immediately greeted by and taken care of by Sam. She treated me as if was her own customer and was amazing. Everyone there was super helpful from Shancie in finance, to Tammy who handled my tags to Christian who hooked me up and answered all the questions I had and even the parts/service guys getting my hitch etc.

This was by FAR the best sales experience I’ve ever had hands down. If you need a trailer call Sam in Thomasville or Carter in Winston!

Purchased a 6x12 Nolan trailer today, Dave in Sales assisted and did a great job showing me the trailer and explaining the features and working thru the paperwork; Shancie assisted with processing the registration & tag paperwork and getting all the appropriate paperwork for that filled out; and Christian assisted in getting the trailer hooked up and explaining important items regarding safety, maintenance, etc. Overall very pleased with the transaction and the service received and highly recommend NC Trailers to perspective buyers.

I had to travel hundreds of miles to complete the purchase. I chose NC Trailer because of their inventory and great price. They met my expectations in every way. Great price, communication, professional setup and prompt support of my needs in the transaction. They are genuinely friendly no-nonsense people. This is not just a glowing review. It's another thanks to a job well done. Mostly on trust, everything from timing to tag to payment to hookup went flawlessly. The product was just as advertised and there were no "incidental" charges. That is a winning approach to sales.
